Original Articles
Reports of novel research findings or conceptual analyses that significantly advance knowledge should be included in original papers. With references excluded, original pieces should not exceed 5,000 words.
Reviews
Reviews, omitting references, should be no more than 6,000 words and should be critical evaluations of the literature, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Mini-review
Similar to regular reviews, invited reviews are requested directly from authors by the editor-in-chief. Please send an email to Professor Gayle Hallowell at gayle.hallowell@medicine.vet with any review proposals you may have.
Commentaries
A wide range of current veterinary science problems are covered in commentary. Typically, commentary is restricted to 1,500 words.
Letter to the Editor Articles
Articles from letters to the editor are acceptable, but they should not be longer than 1,000 words. Comments on previously published papers are appreciated in Letters to the Editor articles. The authors of the study being referred to will have the chance to reply, and comments should only be focused on the paper’s content. The published Letter to the Editor will include an Editor’s footnote (e.g., “The authors of [title of previously published work] offered no comments”) if the authors do not want to respond or do not respond within 30 days.
Case Reports
Case reports must be the first to record a disease in a specific place where epidemiology plays a role, or they must describe a single or small number of cases that describe a novel or unusual presentation, or they must explain a procedure or treatment that would change management and prognosis of the condition. There is no word limit on case reports.
